Should Airline Passengers Be Allowed to Use VOIP Technology From WiFi on Airliners?

Perhaps you have heard that many airlines will now be having in-flight Internet service available via WiFi. That's correct, The Federal Aviation Administration, has approved applications of several airlines to equip their airliners with WiFi. Unfortunately, there have already been Voice IP technology companies advertising wi-fi telephones for your laptop that you can use while flying on an airliner.

This has triggered many people to ask the question, does this mean some people will be able to use their WiFi phone in-flight free, while others will be forced to use their credit cards in the in-flight phone system, which is very expensive? So this begs another question:

Is it fair for some passengers to hog the bandwidth? Shouldn't they pay more if they do? And will they allow people to download full length movies too? Where does it stop? Are all airliners going have the equivalent of T1 lines via satellite in every aircraft? How else can they guarantee quality Internet speeds?

Perhaps, you can understand why this entire WiFi concept may need to come with additional rules, and why it may need to be re-thought. You see, if everyone misuses the system, it will be of no value to anyone. If many passengers are sucking down excessive bandwidth, the Internet will be so slow it will be less than adequate and more like dial-up speeds, which for the business traveler will be totally unacceptable.

Will the airlines have to charge by the bandwidth use or limit usage? After all, if someone wants to watch a movie on their laptop instead of paying for the in-flight movie, they will. Unless of course, there is a charge for extra bandwidth usage, so, please consider all this.

Lance Winslow is a retired Founder of a Nationwide Franchise Chain, and now runs the Online Think Tank.
